Roadside assistance

Something has gone wrong with the car. This page is ordered by what to do first, not by how the service is organised — the explanations are further down, and the emergency number is at the top.

📄 Version 0.3 — draft☎️ 24/7 for trips in progress📍 Mainland Cebu — see coverage
Draft policy copy.Assistance arrangements, response times and who pays for what still need to be settled with hosts and with an assistance provider before launch. 911 is the only number published on this page; your assistance contact is issued on the booking, because it is the host organisation’s own.

🚨 If anyone is hurt, stop reading and call 911

Injuries first, vehicles second, paperwork last. Everything on this page can wait; that cannot.

  1. Get somewhere safe. Off the carriageway if the vehicle still moves, hazards on, early warning device out behind you — it is in the boot, and it was on your handover checklist.
  2. Call 911 for injuries or fire. For a traffic incident without injuries, the local PNP station or traffic office is the right call.
  3. Call the assistance line on your booking. It is the host's number, and it is on the booking screen under the vehicle details.
  4. Tell us through the booking. It opens a thread with the host and with our team at the same time, and it timestamps everything from here on.
  5. Photograph before anything is moved, if it is safe to. Position, plates, damage, surroundings, the other vehicle. This is what a claim and an insurance report are built from.

911 is the national emergency line and it is the only number published here. Your assistance contact is the host organisation’s own, issued on the booking with the vehicle details — so it reaches the people who can authorise work on that specific car.

Report from the booking, not by email

An incident reported through the trip carries its own timestamp, your location, and the photographs, attached to a booking we can already see. An email describing the same thing three hours later carries none of that, and it is the difference between a claim decided on evidence and a claim decided on recollection.

By situation

What happens next

Nine situations, and what each one actually means for your trip and your money.

Mechanical breakdown

The vehicle will not start, overheats, or is unsafe to drive on.

  • Host arranges recovery or a mechanic
  • If it cannot be made usable in reasonable time, the trip ends as a no-fault cancellation
  • You are refunded for what you did not get — including the booking fee
Not your cost, unless misuse caused it

Flat tyre

Every listed vehicle carries a spare, a jack and a warning triangle — you checked them at pick-up.

  • Change it yourself if you can do it safely, or call for help
  • Tell the host either way, so the spare is replaced before the next renter
  • Kerb and pothole damage in Cebu is common and usually a shared conversation, not an automatic claim
Cost depends on cause

Flat battery or lights left on

A jump start is the fastest fix and rarely needs a tow.

  • Host or assistance provider attends
  • A battery that failed on its own is the host’s cost
  • A battery flattened by lights left on overnight is yours
Usually resolved same day

Collision

Injuries first, then the police report — an insurance claim will not proceed without one.

  • Do not agree a private settlement at the roadside
  • Photograph both vehicles, positions, plates and surroundings
  • Every listed vehicle carries compulsory third-party liability cover; what else applies depends on the host’s policy
Report to us the same day

Keys locked in, or lost

Call the assistance line. A locksmith can usually open a car; a lost key is a bigger problem.

  • Replacement keys for a modern vehicle are genuinely expensive and take days
  • A lost key is a renter cost and a deposit claim category
  • Tell the host early — a replacement often has to be ordered
Renter cost

Out of fuel, or the wrong fuel

Running dry is a delivery call. Putting petrol in a diesel is not — stop, do not start the engine.

  • Fuel delivery is arranged and charged to you
  • Misfuelling needs a tow and a tank drain, and it is a renter cost
  • Never restart an engine you have misfuelled; that is what turns a bill into an engine
Renter cost

Stuck, or damaged off-road

Beach access, unpaved mountain roads and flooded streets are where recoveries get expensive.

  • Recovery is arranged where it can be reached at all
  • Driving outside the listing’s travel zones or on prohibited surfaces is a house-rule breach
  • It may also void the host’s cover, which makes the damage yours rather than an insurer’s
Renter cost, and a claim category

Theft or the vehicle is taken

Report to the PNP immediately, then to us — in that order.

  • We supply the booking record, handover data and ID copies to support the report
  • The host is notified straight away
  • Do not attempt to recover a vehicle yourself
Escalated to ops immediately

Stopped by an officer

The OR/CR is in the vehicle and your rental agreement is in the app — both are accepted.

  • Show your own licence, plus your IDP if you are driving on a foreign one
  • Fines and citations from your trip are yours, including ones that arrive weeks later
  • Tell the host if the vehicle is impounded, immediately

How it is arranged

Who does what

Worth being straight about this, because it is not the same as a rental-desk company.

The host organisation
Provides the assistance itself — their mechanic, their tow contact, their spare vehicle. They own the car and they are the only party who can authorise work on it
Sugbo Rentals
Coordinates, and escalates when the host cannot be reached. We record the incident, hold both sides to the booking, and decide the money afterwards
You
Get somewhere safe, report it through the booking, and do not authorise repairs yourself
The driver
On a with-driver booking this is all theirs to handle. Your job is to be somewhere safe and let them work
Do not commission a repair and expect to be reimbursed

A repair you arrange yourself, without the host agreeing to it first, is a repair you have paid for. It is also a repair the host did not choose, on a vehicle they are responsible for — which is why this is a firm rule rather than a preference. Call first, always.

If the host cannot be reached

Contact us and we will reach them. If assistance genuinely does not materialise and the vehicle cannot be made usable, that is a failed rental, not a cancellation you pay for — the booking exits as a no-fault cancellation with a full refund including the booking fee, and the host bears the consequence.

Limits

Where assistance actually reaches

Stated here rather than discovered at 11pm in Dumaguete.

Assistance coverage by location
Where you areAssistanceWhat to expect
Metro Cebu and MactanFullThe dense part of the map. Recovery, jump start, tyre and fuel calls are routine
Mainland Cebu, north and southFull, slowerMoalboal, Oslob, Bantayan-side ports — reachable, but a recovery is a drive. Plan for hours, not minutes
Bantayan IslandLimitedWithin Cebu Province, but the vehicle has left mainland road access. Recovery means a ferry
Bohol · NegrosLimited or noneAssume you are arranging local help yourself and being reimbursed afterwards, if at all. Confirm with your host before you sail
Off-road, beach and flooded roadsCase by caseRecovery may not be possible at all, and the attempt is chargeable
Taking a vehicle off mainland Cebu changes this page

Inter-island travel needs the host’s permission per destination and the ferry permit add-on, and it is one of the reasons the deposit sits at the top of the band — ₱5,000 – ₱20,000 for self-drive. Undeclared inter-island travel is a house-rule breach — and if something happens over there, you have breached the agreement and you are somewhere assistance may not come.

Money

Who pays

The dividing line is cause, not who made the call.

Who bears the cost, by cause
CauseWho paysSettled how
Mechanical failure, worn part, existing faultHostNot a claim. If the trip is cut short, you are refunded for the unused portion
Vehicle undispatchable at pick-upHostNo-fault cancellation, full refund including the booking fee
Lights left on, keys lost, fuel run dry, misfuellingRenterDeposit claim, with the assistance invoice as evidence
Collision — third party at faultInsurerThrough the police report and the host's policy. Your deposit is not the first line
Collision — renter at faultRenter, up to the depositDeposit claim. Anything above the deposit is between you and the host
Prohibited use — off-road, flood, undeclared islandRenterHouse-rule breach. May void the host's cover, which makes the whole repair yours
Compulsory cover is a legal minimum, not comprehensive insurance

Every listed vehicle carries CTPL, and hosts are encouraged to hold comprehensive cover and display it. Beyond that, what is covered depends on the host’s own policy — and whether standard Philippine private-vehicle policies cover rental use at all is an open question we are resolving with insurers. Until it is settled, do not assume a collision is somebody else’s problem, and read the listing’s insurance badge.

Assistance costs charged to you are settled the same way as any other claim — filed within 48 hours of drop-off, with 48 hours for you to accept or dispute. See deposits & claims.

Questions

Asked often, at bad moments

Do I get a replacement vehicle?

Where the host has one free, often yes — a fleet operator with five cars can usually swap you into another. A one-vehicle host cannot.

Where a swap is not possible and the vehicle is out of action, the booking ends as a no-fault cancellation and you are refunded for the unused portion including the booking fee. We will look for a comparable vehicle for your remaining dates.

The car broke down on day one of five. What am I refunded?

The unused portion, plus the booking fee — a failed rental is not a cancellation you pay for. Your deposit is released in full, because a mechanical failure is not damage.

If a replacement vehicle is provided instead and it is comparable, the booking continues rather than being refunded.

Does calling for assistance count against me?

No. Reporting a problem is what we want you to do, and it has no effect on your renter tier, your rating or your deposit. What affects those is an upheld claim — and a claim is about cause, not about who called.

The host is not answering.

Contact us through the booking and we will reach them. Persistent unavailability during a live trip is a host obligation failure and it is acted on — hosts are required to keep a reachable assistance contact for the duration of every booking.

I am on a with-driver booking and the driver has had an accident.

See to yourself first. The driver handles the report and the vehicle — they are the host’s employee and this is their job. Tell us through the booking so it is recorded and so we can arrange onward transport for you.

Damage on a with-driver booking is not settled from your deposit unless you caused it. That is the main reason the with-driver deposit band is ₱0 – ₱5,000 and frequently zero.

Can I use my own insurance or a credit card's rental cover?

You can pursue it, and we will provide the booking record, the handover evidence and the incident report for any claim you make. It does not change how a deposit claim is settled between you and the host, which runs on the platform’s own clock.

Card rental-cover products frequently exclude the Philippines, exclude peer-to-peer rentals, or both. Check before relying on it.

What if the vehicle is impounded?

Tell the host and us immediately. Release requires the registered owner’s involvement, so this cannot be resolved without the host. Impound fees and the release process arising from your driving are your cost, and the booking is likely to end there.
